Product Description
Astronaut James Lovell signed this 12” x 16” print collage which commemorates his Apollo 13 mission. Bordered in solid white, this print bears the mission and its dates “Apollo 13, 11th – 17th April 1970” at the top. Pictured counterclockwise from the top left are: the Moon and Earth; a photograph of the damaged Service Module; the capsule’s successful landing in the Pacific Ocean; an official NASA portrait of James Lovell; and the launch of the Apollo 13 on a Saturn V rocket.

At the bottom of the print is a description of the Apollo 13 mission:

James A Lovell
Apollo 13 Mission Commander

Two days after the launch, the Apollo spacecraft was crippled by an explosion, caused by a fault in an oxygen tank. The explosion damaged the Service Module, resulting in a loss of oxygen and electrical power. The crew used the Lunar Module (Aquarius) as a “lifeboat” in space. The command module remained fully functional on its internal batteries, but they were needed for re-entry and landing so it was shut down shortly after the accident. Despite great hardship caused by severe constraints on power, cabin heat, and potable water, the screw successfully returned to Earth. The mission was thus called a “Successful Failure.”
